Differences Between Male and Female Orientated Magazine Articles Essay
Investigating the Difference Between Male and Female Orientated Magazine Articles For my investigation I decided to take stories sent in by readers to the magazines FHM and Cosmopolitan. FHM is aimed at men aged around 16 to 30, while Cosmopolitan is aimed at women of the same age. I thought it would be interesting to look at the differences between the two formats because I read FHM quite a lot, and some female friends of mine read Cosmopolitan, and I have often wondered what and how many differences and indeed similarities there are between the two magazines. I was also interested in the different ways similar topics were portrayed for the two different sexes. It helps me understand some of the language and gender issues I dealt with last year in English Language, and that is why I chose a stories page, it tells me more about the people who actually read the magazines than the people who write them. The stories I hoped would reflect the people who wrote them, and therefore the people who bought and read the magazines. It is also interesting for me because I want to become a magazine journalist when I leave university. Doing this investigation allows me to take a more in-depth look at what kind of people enjoy these kinds of magazines, and also it gives me a chance to look at the way these types of articles are presented in magazines, looking at things such as layout. I aim to find differences between the subject matter of the letters, the lexis used by the writers, the differences in grammar, the layout of the letters pages in the magazines and the general tenor of the stories. I also aim to reach a conclusion as to what... ... and "freezing my arse off". These slangy informal descriptions are very suitable for the FHM stories but hardly sensible for the Cosmopolitan story. Overall the articles conform closely with my hypothesis. The variances in the tenor were often and obvious. The male stories also conformed to my hypothesis in that they were competing as an incentive to win a prize, whereas the woman was not. The subject matters also matched my hypothesis. The male stories use mostly a different style of writing to the female articles, and indeed these contribute to them having very different effects on the reader. I think that my investigation has been a success. I have proved many of my hypotheses and my aim has been met. There is a large difference in male and female orientated magazine articles, in both style and substance.

Aryan Brotherhood
ARYAN BROTHERHOOD Growing up most people has been part of a group, one way or another. Girls grew up being Girl scouts or Campfire girls, and boys had Boy scouts and baseball. Well, on that note, I remember having a pledge in Girls Scouts. Well the Aryan Brotherhood also has a pledge: ââ¬Å"I will stand by my brother My brother will come before all others My life is forfeited should I fail my brother I will honor my brother in peace and warâ⬠They also live by the motto, ââ¬Å"in for life and out by death. This Brotherhood take these words to heart, and will do anything for a brother whether they are in prisons, jails, or free on the street to handle affairs for others. The Aryan Brotherhood formed in 1964, by white inmates from the infamous San Quentin State Prison, in Northern California. January 16th, 1967 a Nazi prison-gang associate Robert Holderman was stabbed and then battered to death by Black Guerilla Family gang members at San Quentin prison. The very next day, Janua ry 17th, 1,800 black inmates and 1,000 white inmates clashed on the main yard at San Quentin prison over the death of Robert Holderman. The prison guards broke up the brawl by firing shots into the mass of inmates. One inmate suffered severe head trauma from the beating he received from opposing gang members. Two other inmates suffered non-fatal heart attacks. August 27th, 1967 nineteen-year-old Barry Byron Mills was arrested in Ventura, California and held for transfer to Sonoma County, where he had stolen a car. Sonoma County had issued an arrest warrant in his name for grand theft auto. On December 12th, that same year, Barry Mills requested and was denied probation.Instead he was sentenced to one year in the Sonoma County Jail. Within less than two months later on January 12th, 1968, Barry Mills and Buddy Coleman escaped from the Sonoma County Honor Farm. Of course this facility was not a jail or a prison, so there for very low security, with non-violent offenders. Millsââ¬â¢ realm of freedom did not last long, come February 17th, 1968 he was arrested in Windsor, California, and held on a warrant charging escape without force. On March 12th, 1968 Barry Mills was sentenced to one year and a day in prison for escape without force from the Sonoma County Jail. One year and a day later, Barry Mills was released from prison, March 13th, 1969. January 13th, 1970 in Soledad State Prison, Aryan Brotherhood leader Buzzard Harris, and along his side fellow Aryan Brotherhood members Smiley Hoyle, Harpo Harper and Chuko Wendekier. Siding with the Aryan Brotherhood where Mexican Mafia members Colorado Joe Ariaz, John Fanene, and Raymond Guerrero went to battle with Black Guerilla Family gang members on the exercise yard at Soledad prison. Tower guard Opie Miller opened fire with his high-powered rifle, killing Black Guerilla leader W.L. Nolen, Cleveland Edwards and Alvin Miller. Buzzard Harris the Aryan Brotherhood leader was wounded in the groin by one of the bullets that came from Opie Millerââ¬â¢s rifle. Once again Barry Mills could not stay out of trouble and Mills and William Hackworth were arrested after robbing a Stewarts Point convenience store in January 30th, 1970. Within a few days, Barry Mills was convicted of first-degree armed robbery after co-defendant William Hackworth testified for the prosecution against Mills. This time Mills was sentenced to 5 years to life in prison.Since the 1970ââ¬â¢s, the Aryan Brotherhood has spread out across the states throughout many prisons. Many of them are in California such as, California State Prison at Corcoran, Pelican Bay, USP Marion, Folsom State Prison, California Institution for men in Chino to name a few. They also have the brotherhood thing going on here in Nevada at the High Desert State Prison. The Aryan Brotherhood are mainly concerned with White-Supremacy and self-protection from Black and Hispanic gangs. The recent conviction of four Aryan Brotherhood members in Santa Ana Califo rnia, was one the largest death penalty cases in U.S. history. This revealed an allegedly ââ¬Å"ruthlessâ⬠gang who regularly murdered those who opposed the system, growing so out of control that even its own ranking members could not consider themselves safe. The violent ordering of murders throughout the United States, whether inside the prisons or not is quite frightening. The Aryan Brotherhood has connections worldwide, and expect orders of any kind to be followed. In 1997 when Mafia don John Gotti was locked up, a man named Walter Johnson allegedly punched Gotti in the eye in an Illinois prison.John Gotti paid Barry Mills $500,000 to kill Johnson, who at the time was staying in a Colorado prison, Mills agreed. However Johnson got lucky, for the fact that Gotti died in prison in 2002. Although the Aryan Brotherhood was originally formed for the protection of whites against blacks in prison, the gang gradually moved to criminal activities such as murder. That was not good e nough or beneficial enough for this gang, so they strive to control the sale of drugs, gambling, and ââ¬Å"punksâ⬠, or male prostitutes. According to sources, racial warfare comes in second to business. The Aryan Brotherhood has also carried out contract killings for the Mexican Mafia. April 21, 1972, Aryan Brotherhood members Fred Mendrin and Donald Hale murdered Fred Castillo by stabbing him to death at the Chino Institute for Men. Castillo was the leader of the Nuestra Familia gang, and Castillo was murdered as part of a contract with the Mexican Mafia. December 15, 1972 Fred Mendrin and Donald Hale where sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Fred Castillo. Racist beliefs prevent members form consorting with African Americans, including taking anything from a cigarette or even a candy bar from them.In 1973 the Aryan Brotherhood spreads into the federal prisons. Much more came with the merge to the federal prisons. In 2006 it was revealed in the recent murder trial of 4 Aryan Brotherhood members, that their communication included codes and cryptograms. Some of these techniques involved a 400 year old binary alphabet system invented by Sir Francis Bacon, concealing notes in mop handles and beneath rocks in the recreation yards. The Aryan Brotherhood also supposedly perfected the art of urnine-writing where one dips a Q-tip in some acidic substance such as citrus juice, urine or bleach and write with it making out the resulting words. These words stay invisible until they are exposed to direct heat, such as a match flame. Throughout the late 1970ââ¬â¢s, many Brotherhood members went down for many different crimes such as bank robbery, and one member Little Joe Oââ¬â¢Rourke, who opened fire on the El Camino Community College campus for opening up fire there, and was sentenced to seven years in prison. In 1978, Barry Mills is sentenced to 20 years in the federal prison for planning a bank robbery in Fresno, California. The bank was robber by th e Aryan Brotherhood in June of 1976. Although Barry Mills did not directly participate in the robbery, but he provided the blueprint for it.Barry Mills in 1979 murdered Aryan Brotherhood associate John Sherman Marzloff in the United States Prison Atlanta, Georgia. In 1980, the Aryan Brotherhood set up a commission to run the operations of all Aryan Brotherhood members. The commission was composed of three men. Ironically enough, Barry Mills assumed command of the commission. June 8, 1980, one of the Aryan Brotherhood associates was murdered his name was Robert Hogan. The order came directly from Barry Mills. In the same ââ¬Å"gangâ⬠is one thing although when putting hits out and ordering murders on men of other organizationsââ¬â¢, almost always there will be some kind of retaliation.September 27, 1982 Aryan Brotherhood Commissioner Thomas ââ¬Å"Terrible Tomâ⬠Silverstein murdered Cadillac Smith, who was the leader of the D. C. Mob, at the United States Prison, Marion , Illinois. Now to retaliate, a couple of months later, Aryan Brotherhood member Neil Baumgarten was murdered by members of the D. C. Mob. Baumgartenââ¬â¢s murder was payback for the murder of Cadillac Smith. In January of 1983 another member of the brotherhood, Blinky Griffen was convicted of murdering T-Bone Gibson. Now the Aryan Brotherhood just do not stop at rival gangs, they murder their own also. In February of 1983 one month to the day, Aryan Brotherhood member Richard Barnes was murdered. The order to kill Barnes came from Aryan Brotherhood Councilman McKool Slocum. Again, September of 1983 Aryan Brotherhood associate Gregory Keefer was stabbed to death by another Aryan Brotherhood associate. http://www. splcenter. org/get-informed/intelligence-report/browse-all-issues/2005/fall/smashing-the-shamrock http://www. urbandictionary. com/define. php? term=Aryan%20Brotherhood

Essay The Death Penalty is Not the Solution - 2978 Words
The death penalty has been present, in one way or another, for virtually as long as human civilization has existed. The reasons why are apparent; it is intrinsically logical to human beings that a person who takes the life of another should also be killed. This philosophy is exemplified in the famous Biblical passage, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. However, in light of recent research into ethics, criminology and the justice system, the time has come for us to re-examine our ageless paradigm of revenge. Capital punishment is a custom in which prisoners are executed in accordance with judicial practice when they are convicted of committing a ââ¬Å"capital crimeâ⬠. Capital crimes are crimes considered so atrocious that they shouldâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Capital punishment is often defended on the grounds that society has a moral obligation to protect the safety and welfare of its citizens. Criminals put the safety and welfare of the public at risk. In order to ensure that killers do not kill again, murderers should be put to death. Second, those who favour capital punishment contend that society must support methods that will bring about the highest balance of good over evil. Capital punishment is believed to be such a practice. It is seen as beneficial to society because it could deter violent crime. While it is challenging to produce direct evidence to back up this assertion, by definition, those deterred by the death penalty do not commit murders or other violent crimes, common sense indicates that if people are aware they will face death if they partake in a certain act, they will be reluctant to perform that action. If the threat of death does in fact prevent murderers, the abolition of the death penalty will sacrifice the lives of many innocent victims whose killers may have been deterred. However, if the death penalty does not discourage crimes, and we continue to enforce it, we will only have sacrificed the lives of convicted murderers. It is surely better for society to take the chance that the death p enalty deters in order to protect the lives of innocent individuals than to take a gamble that it does not deter and thus guard the lives of wrong doers, all the while risking the livesShow MoreRelatedDeath Penalty Essay1050 Words à |à 5 PagesThe death penalty or capital punishment is an issue that has sparked controversy and anxiety in todayââ¬â¢s society. Clean English Short Story Essay It was a cold and grey January morning. The sun was rising over the thick, white clouds and causing the sky to glow a dark shade of red. A loud and high pitched snore from his wife woke Neal up. Neal was a 40 year old railway engineer; he had been married for 20 years, and smoking for fifteen. Usually, after getting up Neal would go and have a cigarette, but today was going to be different. Neal was going to give up; he was going to be clean. As he slowly opened his eyes, Neal put his hand on his bed side table, as he did every day, and searched for the pack of cigarettes. Today however, there were no cigarettes; last night they had all been thrown away. Neal thought to himself, how could he possibly get up without having a fag? How would he be able to last all day, forever without smoking again? He raised his head and felt a large thumping sensation, it was the sort of feeling you get when youre hungry,, and Neal was hungry, but only for one thing, tobacco. Once in the kitchen, he put the kettle on, got a glass of water, and then went outside. The damp morning air was fresh; he could hear the birds and smell the newly-potted plants in the garden. Usually at this point, Neal would have his second cigarette of the day, and without it he felt confused and unfocused. Neal craved a cigarette, he craved the warm smoke rushing down his throat and the relaxation of slowly breathing and out. How was he going to survive? Once in his car on the way to work, he was really suffering. The car smelt like it had been in a huge scale fire, the seats had stains of them from when the ends of cigarettes had accidentally burnt the fabric, the dash board was badly scolded too, as Neal had occasionally used it as an ash tray when in need. All these reminders of cigarettes were driving Neal mad; he needed to get out of the car, go somewhere where he could get rid of cigarettes, and get them out of his head. How was he going to be able to do this when he worked as a teacher at the run down, and dodgy local comprehensive school? Where older students smoke behind sheds, where his classroom has posters about the dangers of smoking and where once in the staff room, it was more like being in the local pub, due to the amount of smoke in the air. As Neal attempted to park his car in a space that you could barely see, as the lines that used to be yellow, were now virtually camouflaged onto the broken tarmac, he could sense that this day was going to be one of the hardest ever. His head was still pounding as if he had been punched and all his muscles still ached due to the lack of nicotine. As Neal approached the main entrance to the school one of the students shouted something that sounded like chimney to him. This happened every day, because as teacher that smoked, he had a reputation and many rumours circulated daily about him, especially as he spent many of his lessons teaching about the dangers of it. Neal looked forward to telling all his students he was clean, he looked forward to getting a better reputation in school. It was thoughts like this that kept him going. .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 , .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 .postImageUrl , .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 , .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256:hover , .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256:visited , .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256:active { border:0!important; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256:active , .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256 .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3065bac684d9fb174996da8d66902256:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Analyse a prose EssayOnce he had dropped his ragged briefcase in the staffroom, he decided to go straight to his classroom to get away from the smell. Lesson one was year ten for him. Year ten were a hard year, they were not yet old enough to be treated like full adults, but were too old to be treated like children. This issue was always challenging for Neal, and to make it worse the topic for the lesson was drugs and smoking. As the students walked into his class in an un-orderly manner, and still hyper from pre-school activities, Neal could smell the smoke on some of the students clothes. As he sucked the smell in, he felt fresh, he really needed a cigarette. He decided that after the lesson he was giving up, he could take it no longer. This all changed within the first ten minutes, as the saying goes teachers learn more from their students than students learn from the teachers and this was definitely true of today. The pupils were being excellent, really interested in the topic, some even gave their personal thoughts: I dont like the fact my mum smokes, the house stinks and I always tell my grandpa that he will get cancer because he smokes. These were the sort of comments that were coming up. Did Neal really want one of his children to say something like this in the future? These comments really made Neal think, he was going to give up now, it wasnt a maybe, or even an if. Neal wasnt going to ever touch a cigarette again. Would he want to be known as the grandpa who died early of cancer? Was he going to let his children grow up in a home that stunk of smoke and was dangerous? The answer to all of this was no. When he got home to his wife from work, he told her about his day at school. When he mentioned the comments that some of the children had said in class tears started pouring down his face, how could he even contemplate ending up like that? Over the next few days Neal stayed strong. At times it was tough, and he was on the verge of giving in, but the Science lesson that morning stopped him from doing so. He had a new will power, a new reason to live, Neal was a changed man.à Ten years on from this day and Neal has not touched a cigarette. He has two beautiful children and has now been promoted to head of Science. In his words I am a changed person. He no longer relies on tobacco to make him happy, but can see other things that are more important in life such as family and personal growth. Ten years on and Neal is clean.
